Mujing Raissa Mij, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a student of the Master’s Programme in Linguistic Theory and Language Description. In her interview with the HSE News Service, she reflects of her studies at HSE University, shares her career plans, and describes the summer vibe in Moscow.

Why I Chose HSE University

I chose Moscow because it is Russia’s political, cultural, and economic hub—there’s always something happening.
When I applied for the scholarship, several universities were within my reach.

After doing my research, I was particularly drawn to and impressed by the programmes offered by HSE and its reputation

I therefore chose HSE, as it offers excellent programmes and is recognised as one of the top universities, both in Russia and internationally

Challenges I Faced

The first time I arrived at Vnukovo airport, I was greeted by an icy cold wind with open arms.

The hardest part has been adapting to the winter and the limited daylight

Also, navigating certain aspects of daily life can still be challenging, even though I have a basic understanding of the language.

My Studies

Among my favourite courses is Sociolinguistics, which I particularly like for its introduction to the concept of gender indexicality. I also like the course A Grammar of a Non- (Standard Average) European Language, which introduces concepts of non-European languages. As a French and English speaker myself, learning how other languages work has been a really enriching experience.

I have had professors who made even complex topics accessible and engaging

Alexey Vinyar, my sociolinguistics professor, was one of those who truly helped me understand the course, especially since it included concepts from a language I had just discovered. He also recommended some fascinating books on sociolinguistics, as I had never taken this class before; it was essentially my way of getting acquainted with the subject.

I also appreciate the way George Moroz teaches; he manages to get everyone to take an active part in class discussions with his class on instrumental phonetics. This course is really interesting and valuable to me, especially since I studied phonetics during my bachelor year, but at a different level. It's exciting to dive deeper into the subject now and understand the finer details of speech analysis. Having the tools to break down speech sounds at such a detailed level is truly enriching. In general, all the teachers are really professional and have an excellent command of their subject.

My Extracurricular Activities

I have a bit of time for sport as the HSE accommodation is well-equipped with a gym for students and I love going for walks, especially in the parks. I also take part in other activities in local church here in Moscow.

During my first year, I didn't really get involved in any extra-curricular activities, but this summer I intend to become a buddy and help new students adapt to Moscow

During my first year in Moscow, I had a buddy named Anastasia Serova, who gave me a lot of support as I adjusted to life in Moscow. She helped me with all the administrative formalities, showed me around the city, and introduced me to a number of cultural sites, such as parks. She also helped me with everyday tasks, such as finding food shops and finding my way around the metro. Her support really helped me, and I'd like to offer the same help for new students coming to study in Moscow.

I’m also planning to attend the World Youth Festival assembly that will take place in Nizhny Novgorod.

Living in Moscow

I enjoy the vibrancy of the city.

Moscow has so much to offer, from cultural events and beautiful architecture to well-equipped libraries and efficient public transport

Studying in such a dynamic city is both stimulating and inspiring.

I was really surprised to see how kind and welcoming the people are. It is far beyond what you hear on TV or see on social media. I spent a short time in hospital, and frankly, the doctors and nurses were lovely to me. I never felt treated differently because I was a foreigner—they were just as caring as if they were a local patient. I was also pleasantly surprised by how modern and reliable the public transportation system is. The metro in particular is impressive.

For relaxation, I love Gorky Park and Sokolniki. While Gorky Park is perfect for a leisurely stroll, it is Sokolniki, with its beautiful forest, that really stands out. Taking walks through the forest is especially enjoyable in the warmer months and even in winter. For studying, I often go to HSE libraries, quiet cafés, or Kolomenskoye park.

I visited St Petersburg last winter, which was unforgettable. I hope to see more of Russia.

My Future Plans

This summer, I plan to focus on my research project and improve my Russian. I would also like to take a short trip to Kirov and spend some time resting and planning for the upcoming academic year.

After graduating, I would like to teach and conduct research in linguistics

As I have a bachelor’s degree in Teaching and am about to complete this MA in Applied Linguistics, I am passionate about helping students understand languages and exploring how they work. I want to make language learning enjoyable and useful while bringing in new ideas through research.

I’m also considering continuing my studies with a PhD in the future

HSE has broadened my academic perspective and deepened my interest in research. It has helped me become more confident in my skills, more open to interdisciplinary work, and more determined to contribute meaningfully to the field of language education and applied linguistics. I have really benefited from my experience at HSE, which has gone beyond anything I could have imagined.
